Opera Ithaca is now accepting applications and nominations for the Executive Director position, which provides leadership and oversight of the business, promotional, and operational aspects of Opera Ithaca’s season and productions to enable the company to achieve its artistic mission.
The Executive Director will help to guide Opera Ithaca and its dedicated staff and volunteers into the future, building on a strong vision and dedication to its unique mission of championing the work of women composers and increasing the diversity of operatic repertoire.

Opera Ithaca brings professional opera to Ithaca, New York and the surrounding Finger Lakes and Southern Tier region. Opera Ithaca enriches the local arts community by providing a consistent venue for diverse classical vocal music and produces distinctive and highly theatrical productions of diverse operatic and musical theatre literature as well as concerts, lectures, and educational outreach events. Opera Ithaca engages a diverse and multi-generational audience to aid in the longevity of opera as a living art form.
The Executive Director provides leadership and oversight of the business, promotional, and operational aspects of Opera Ithaca’s season and productions to enable the company to achieve its artistic mission . This position ensures that legal, operational, administrative, and financial infrastructure are in place to support Opera Ithaca’s mission and provide a fulfilling and engaging experience for its artists and the community. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors and is a peer of the Artistic Director.
The Executive Director is charged with ensuring the following responsibilities are executed either directly or through delegation.
Secure and manage rights for all productions. Develop and execute artist contracts, oversee employment and payroll management. Manage the Company budget including reconciliation, tracking production expenses, and reimbursements. Manage Company insurance coverage. Prepare regular reports for the Board of Directors and liaise with the Board on needs that emerge throughout the season. Coordinate artist travel and housing with the Artistic Director.
Arrange venues to facilitate Company rehearsals, shows, apprentice programming, and special events. Manage venue-related scheduling, act as primary signatory for venue-related contracts, arrange venue payment, and make insurance arrangements.
Establish box office functions with the venue or independently. Monitor ticket sales. Establish comp ticketing policy and manage comp ticket dissemination. Coordinate ushers and the front-of-house patron experience. Coordinate program design and production including gathering artist bios and headshots, organizing/creating program content, estimating print volumes, arranging for printing and delivery to venue. Oversee customer support of patrons through email and social media channels.
Oversee marketing and promotion activities including the creation and distribution of press releases, posters, and postcards. Coordinate social media campaigns and oversee the creation of promotional photo and video assets. Manage the company website. Collect and publish cast photos, bios, and links to artist websites. Schedule and coordinate radio and television interviews and invite press to cover productions. Coordinate email campaigns to subscribers about the season, ticket availability, and other promotional outreach. Oversee program ad sales. Send personal invitations to key donors and other strategic contacts to attend productions.
Oversee fundraising activities including managing the relationship with the Opera Ithaca Community Ambassadors (OICA). Work with the Board to create a coordinated fundraising strategy which includes Board, apprentice, and OICA fundraising initiatives. Oversee research of grants and grant writing. Secure food and beverage donations for special events.
Coordinate production logistics including arranging for instruments and piano tuning. Facilitate production meetings and post-mortems. Ensure that the production period schedule is created and published. Oversee the creation and management of supertitles. Coordinate curtain speeches and the special recognition of sponsors, the cast, and the crew.
Maintain friendly, constructive, and fruitful relations with members of the Ithaca community, including the music and theater programs at the universities, as well as other not-for-profit arts organizations.
Experience in some or all of the specified responsibilities for one or more organizations with similarity to Opera Ithaca
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or compensating experience
Local to Tompkins County preferred
Demonstrable skills and at least three relevant letters of recommendation
Candidate must be highly organized and be self-directed
Ability to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment; ability to treat all people equitably and with a sensitivity and awareness to cultural difference; demonstrated ability to hold others accountable for behavior that is supportive of a community that is diverse and inclusive.
Facility with various communication tools, office software (including Excel), experience using financial software (e.g., Quickbooks, which is what OI uses), comfort addressing audiences, polite telephone manner
