Opera Ithaca is now accepting applications and nominations for the Artist Director position, which provides leadership and oversight of the artistic and technical aspects of Opera Ithaca’s season and productions to enable the company to achieve its artistic mission.
The Artistic Director will help to guide Opera Ithaca and its dedicated staff and volunteers into the future, building on a strong vision and dedication to its unique mission of championing the work of women composers and increasing the diversity of operatic repertoire.

Opera Ithaca brings professional opera to Ithaca, New York and the surrounding Finger Lakes and Southern Tier region. Opera Ithaca enriches the local arts community by providing a consistent venue for diverse classical vocal music and produces distinctive and highly theatrical productions of diverse operatic and musical theatre literature as well as concerts, lectures, and educational outreach events. Opera Ithaca engages a diverse and multi-generational audience to aid in the longevity of opera as a living art form.
The Artistic Director provides leadership and oversight of the artistic and technical aspects of Opera Ithaca’s season and productions to enable the company to achieve its artistic mission. This position ensures that the many aspects of productions are coordinated and effective in supporting Opera Ithaca’s mission and provide a fulfilling and engaging experience for its artists and the community. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors and is a peer of the Executive Director.
The Artistic Director is charged with ensuring the following responsibilities are executed either directly or through delegation.
Select Opera Ithaca’s seasons and design the placement of shows and special events.
The Artistic Director is expected to direct and/or music direct at least one production per season as part of his/her responsibilities (two per season if the season contains four or more productions).
Artist Selection and Relations
Select cast members including principals, chorus, dancers, actors, supernumeraries, and understudies, the production teams including the director, conductor, choreographer, and designers for scenic, costume, lighting aspects of productions, select technical director and stage manager and other production-related staff. Organize events and efforts to welcome and thank full team and cast for their participation, follow-up with artists about their experience, maintain a roster of interested artists for future consideration,
Organize and conduct production meetings (design, director, and full team). Attend rehearsals and performances as available, facilitate post-mortems; manage rehearsals, actors, and technicians including scheduling based on cast/team availability, create and distribute contact list; oversee technical production processes including costume fittings and prop management, coordinate house management, serve as liaison to front-of-house staff, music director, stage management, and director.
Conduct or arrange for music direction of all productions, select orchestrations, approve/prepare score cuts, manage distribution of orchestral parts; oversee the selection and recruitment of instrumentalists to support rehearsals and productions,
Marketing and Development
Participate in promotional efforts including writing press releases, providing media interviews, coordinate artists to take part in outreach and events, Opera
Produce Opera Ithaca’s annual Edward M. Murray International Competition of Voice, including scheduling, venue selection, engaging an accompanist, and publicizing the event to young vocalists. Serve as primary judge in the competition and recruit guest judges.
Oversee the Apprentice Program, including designing apprentice programming and emerging artist cultivation, recruiting and engaging apprentice artists, arranging or providing coaching opportunities to apprentice artists, and casting apprentices in chorus or understudy roles.
Maintain friendly, constructive, and fruitful relations with members of the Ithaca community, including the music and theater programs at the universities, as well as other not-for-profit arts organizations.
Experience in some or all of the specified responsibilities for one or more organizations with similarity to Opera Ithaca
Connections in the national and international opera artist community and the ability to draw upon their services
Ability to articulate a clear artistic vision and to achieve impressive results with limited resources
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or compensating experience
Local to Tompkins County preferred
Demonstrable skills and at least three relevant letters of recommendation
Candidate must be highly organized and be self-directed
Ability to cultivate an inclusive, diverse and welcoming environment; ability to treat all people equitably and with a sensitivity and awareness to cultural difference; demonstrated ability to hold others accountable for behavior that is supportive of a community that is diverse and inclusive.
Comfort with public speaking and being interviewed by media
